Retiree Health Benefits Transition Guide
Transitioning from an active employee to a retiree involves significant changes to your healthcare coverage. While you can still participate in the District's group plans, your benefits will no longer be subsidized in the same way, and both your coverage options and costs will change.
Key Steps for Retirement Planning
If you are planning to retire within the next year, it is recommended to start the transition process early.
-
Attend a Webinar: Register for a Kaiser Permanente Medicare 101 webinar to learn about eligibility, how Parts A, B, C, and D work, and when to enroll or switch plans.
-
Consult the Experts: OUSD Benefits staff hold weekly Zoom Drop-in hours on Thursdays from 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM (except during school breaks) to answer transition questions.
Review the Rates: Coverage costs for retirees differ from active employee rates. You can view the current OUSD Retiree Health Benefits Rates online.

Open Enrollment for Retirees
Retirees participate in an annual Open Enrollment period to make changes to their coverage.
-
Timeline: Open Enrollment is usually open April 1st - April 30th annually.
-
How to Get/Submit Forms:
-
Support: Contact the Benefits Department to request forms or submit digital copies.
-
Mail: Forms can be mailed to the Talent Division Benefits Department at 1011 Union Street, Site 944, Oakland, CA 94607.
-
Planning Tip Ensure you have your Medicare eligibility confirmed before enrolling in retiree plans, as these plans are often designed to coordinate directly with Medicare benefits.
